Q. What is Roaring River Parks Alliance (RRPA)?
A. A group of people living in Southwest Missouri that was concerned about water and air pollution in and around Roaring River State
Park. They organized into a 501c(3).
Q. What does RRPA do?
A. Alert the public to the dangers that are happening to our waters, especially Roaring River and Table Rock Lake. CAFOs are
encroaching into the Roaring River watershed putting chemicals in the water that have serious effects on human and aquatic life. They
also have had several hearings to stop one CAFO from operating within ½ mile of the river and 1 ½ miles from the park Hearings are still
going on with many expenses involved, lawyers’ fees, and trips to Jefferson City, mass mailings, etc.
Q. What is a 501c(3)?
A. It is a tax law provision granting exemption from the federal income tax to non-profit organizations. People may give donations and
those donations would be tax deductible to the donor.

Q. What is a Confined Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO)?
A. A building where a large number of animals, be it chickens, turkeys, hogs, or cows that are confined in cramped quarters for the

Q. What is DNR – Missouri Department of Natural Resources?
A. The department that is in charge of our natural resources, historical sites and state parks. They also give out the construction and

A. A government agency that is there to protect the environment of the United States.

A. Department of Health and Human Services, a government agency that is in charge of the public’s health and diseases.

Q. What is a stay and what was this stay about?
A. A stay means to stop all activities at a construction site. The Administrative Hearing Commission decided that a stay was needed on

Q. What is a losing stream?
A. A stream or river that loses water as it flows downstream. Must be 30% or more of the water going into the groundwater.
Q. What is a roofed storage structure?
A. A shed that holds the animal’s manure, which also contains sawdust or straw, to absorb some of the poop. The litter would be held
until it could be applied to a field and/or to keep it out of the rain, snow, etc.
Q. What is a composter?
A. A way to manage the mortality of the animals, the dead birds are buried in litter and turned ever so often and they decompose over
time. This is the preferred method of disposing of the dead animals which must be done within 24 hours of death. You can smell the
decomposing litter when it is turned over.
Q. What is an incinerator?
A. Another method of deposing of the dead animals. It is more expensive then composting because some kind of heat, be it gas,
propane, or wood is needed and it must get up to a high heat to be affective and legally done. The birds need to be incinerated within 24
hours. The smell is generated into the air.
